Typical parking damage and how smart repair works
Parking damage usually looks similar: a scratched or dented bumper from manoeuvring, a dent in the door from the neighbouring door, scrapes on the wing from a pillar in the car park or a mirror housing torn off. For such limited damage we work with smart repair, also called spot repair, wherever possible. The principle: only the damaged spot is repaired, not the whole component. This is easy on material, on the original paint and on your budget.
Cracked plastic is welded and reinforced from behind, scratches and small irregularities are finely filled and sanded. A partial respray of the repair zone follows. What matters most is matching the colour: the vehicle painter mixes the paint according to the colour code, checks it against the vehicle and lets the new paint fade softly into the existing surface so that no transition remains visible. Finally the clear coat is polished. Small dents in the metal without paint damage are pushed out without painting.
Bumper, door, wing: repair instead of replace
Plastic bumpers can be saved surprisingly often. Cracks, holes from broken brackets and deep scrapes are welded, filled and painted. On doors and wings made of sheet metal, the panel beater beats out the dent, smooths the surface and has it partially resprayed. The advantage over a new part: fit and panel gaps remain original, fewer add-on parts have to be removed, and the repair is usually completed more quickly.
Replacement is unavoidable when mounting points or the inner structure of the bumper are broken, when the plastic has shattered over a large area or when the metal has been compressed so badly that it can no longer be straightened cleanly. Parts behind the bumper count too: if the crash beam, parking sensors or radar bracket are damaged, they are replaced and checked. We tell you openly which option is technically sound and explain the difference in the indicative quote.
Parking damage by an unknown party: insurance, police, evidence
If you find your car damaged and the person responsible has gone, document everything first: photos of the damage from close up and from a distance, of the location, of paint traces in a different colour and of fragments on the ground. Note the date, time and address and ask about witnesses or video surveillance, for example in the car park. Reporting it to the police makes sense, because leaving the scene of an accident without reporting it is generally a punishable offence and the insurer may require a police report, depending on the policy.
Who pays depends on your cover. As a rule you need fully comprehensive cover or separate parking damage insurance, depending on the policy with its own excess and limits on the number or amount of claims. Whether a loss of no-claims bonus follows also depends on the policy. We look with you at what is covered and, if needed, work out both routes: handling through the insurer or repair at your own expense with smart repair.
