Wheel repair

Alloy wheel repair and refurbishment in Biel/Bienne

Carrosserie K.I. in Biel/Bienne repairs alloy wheels with kerb damage, scratches and chipped paint. The wheel is inspected, sanded, filled and then painted or powder-coated in the matching colour. This is worthwhile for cosmetic damage to the surface. Where a wheel is cracked or bent, we assess whether a repair is safe, otherwise we recommend replacement.

How an alloy wheel is refurbished, step by step

It starts with the inspection. The wheel is cleaned and checked for cracks, buckling and deformed areas, because only a technically sound wheel is refurbished cosmetically. The tyre is then usually removed so that the rim edge is accessible all the way round. The damaged zone is sanded down until no burrs or edges can be felt. If material is missing, the area is built up with a suitable filler and sanded back to its original contour.

The paint is then built up: primer, colour coat in the specified wheel shade and clear coat, or a powder coating if the whole wheel is being refinished. Three things count for quality: clean preparation, an exactly matched colour and an even coat thickness. Silver wheel shades are demanding, because even small deviations stand out next to the other wheels. Finally the tyre is fitted, the wheel is balanced and tightened on the vehicle to the specified torque.

When a wheel repair is worthwhile and where the limits lie

A wheel repair is worthwhile above all for cosmetic damage: scuff marks from the kerb, scratches, chipped clear coat or the first signs of corrosion under the paint. This often comes up before handing back a leased vehicle or before a sale, because damaged wheels quickly catch the eye there. With expensive original wheels too, refurbishment is often the more sensible solution than a new wheel. Not every finish can be treated in the same way: two-tone or diamond-cut wheels take more work than wheels painted in a single colour.

The limit is safety. A wheel carries the vehicle and absorbs braking and lateral forces. Cracks, pronounced run-out or a deformed wheel barrel affect the strength. In such cases we assess whether a repair is responsible, and otherwise recommend replacement. The price depends on the wheel size, the depth of the damage, the finish and the number of wheels. With a photo sent via the online damage report, you will receive an indicative quote including VAT within 24 hours on working days.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a wheel repair cost in Biel/Bienne?

+

The price depends on the size of the wheel, the depth of the damage, the finish and the number of wheels. Minor kerb damage on a wheel painted in a single colour takes less work than a complete refinish. Send us a photo via the online damage report: you will receive an indicative quote including VAT within 24 hours on working days.

Can an alloy wheel with kerb damage be repaired?

+

In most cases, yes. Scuff marks on the rim edge usually affect the surface only. We sand the damaged area, build up any missing material and paint the wheel in the matching colour. If the rim edge is badly dented or a lot of material is missing, we first check whether a repair is sensible and safe.

Is a repaired wheel still safe?

+

A purely cosmetic refurbishment does not change the load-bearing structure of the wheel. Things are different with cracks, radial or lateral run-out or a deformed wheel barrel: damage of this kind affects the strength. We assess every wheel individually and advise replacement if we do not consider a repair to be safe. We tell you this openly before any costs arise.
